West High’s Baker, Martins earn Athletes of the Week honors

West High seniors Justin Baker and Paris Martins on Monday were named the *Sports Spotlight* and Hy-Vee Horizon Milk Athletes of the Week.

The announcement comes just one week after the two helped the West High Trojans to the Class 3A boys’ soccer state championship.

“It means a lot to me to win this award,” Baker said. “We have worked hard to get to where we are at, and it’s more motivation to get better.”

Martins and Baker combined to put up 75 points in the regular season for the Trojans. Martins led the team with 17 goals and a .567 shot on goal percentage. Baker finished second on the team in goals with 13 and assists with 9.

The West soccer team finished the season with a record of 17-1 and won its fourth state title in five years this season. The Trojans were pegged as the Class 3A’s top team entering the season.

“It was very satisfying,” West soccer coach Brad Stiles said about winning back-to-back state titles. “We were able to work through some of the early season issues, and Justin and Paris were a big part in that.”

Baker has signed to play soccer at the University of St. Thomas in Minnesota next year. Martins earn the Class 3A second-team all-state honor, and will play soccer next year at Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa.
