A man sentenced to life in prison for the murder of a former Iowa City landlord has appealed to the Iowa Supreme Court.

Justin Marshall, 22, was sentenced on April 26 to life in prison for killing John Versypt, the former landlord of Broadway Condominiums, in October 2009. Marshall filed for an appeal on May 9.

Marshall was the second of three suspects in this case. At the time of the homicide, he was living in his aunt’s apartment with his two cousins and his cousin’s boyfriend, Charles Thompson, who was the first suspect in the case. His trial ended in a mistrial because of a mistake by the prosecution. He later pleaded guilty to accessory to a felony and signed a document stating he knew Marshall had killed Versypt.

The third suspect is Courtney White. White pleaded guilty to tampering with a witness on April 26. He was credited the time he has already served, and his attorney, Jonathan Stensvaag, told The Daily Iowan he was to be released within a few days after the plea was made.
