Woman accused of stealing several checks

A Coralville woman was accused of forging four stolen checks from a van.

Teresa Obert, 25, was charged December 2012 with third-degree theft.

According to an Iowa City police complaint, Obert admitted to officials that she stole at least four checks from the victim’s van. The four checks were allegedly forged with the victim’s name and then cashed.

The checks were dated on four different days in December 2012, and totaled approximately $930, the complaint said. Obert admitted to entering a check with a witness to cash one of the checks.

According to the complaint, witnesses said Obert was present when two more checks were cashed. Once check was cashed Hill’s Bank and a witness’ grandmother cashed the other check.

Obert allegedly stated that she tricked one of the witnesses into believe the checks were not stolen, but denied forging them or receiving any money, the complaint said.

According to the complaint, Obert has had numerous pervious convictions for theft.

Third-degree theft is an aggravated misdemeanor.
