Iowa City looks for unused prom apparel for ‘Project Prom’

City officials are requesting prom wear for their “Project Prom” initiative.

According to an Iowa City news release, the project asks for unused prom-wear including dresses, tuxedos, shoes, handbags, and donate them to the East Side Recycling Center’s Education Center, 2401 Scott Blvd. from 1-4 p.m. Saturday.

On March 9, students who plan to attend prom are invited to shop for clothing and accessories from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. at the East Side Education Center. Items will be available on a first-come, first-served basis, and some changing areas will be available on the day of the give-away.

Project Prom is a program coordinated by the Iowa City Landfill and Recycling Center and community member Mary Palmberg. This program is modeled after similar events held across Iowa; earlier this year, an event in Muscatine resulted in the donation and give-away of almost 100 prom dresses.
