Pair charged with second-degree theft

A Cedar Rapids man and woman have been accused of attempting to steal more than $2,000 worth of merchandise at Scheels.

According to a Johnson County Sheriff’s Office complaint, Earl Buckallew Jr. and Kimberly Kruse were charged Tuesday with second-degree theft.

Kruse and Buckallew were reportedly observed concealing merchandise valued at $2,144.78 and leaving the store without attempting to pay for it. Both admitted to concealing items in a baby stroller knowing they would not pay for them, the complaint said.

Second-degree theft of more than $1,000 is a Class-D felony punishable by up to five years in prison with a maximum fine of $7,500.
