Man charged with possession of marijuana after police pursuit

A man was charged Oct. 3 after police allegedly observed him conducting a transaction consistent with a drug deal at 1956 Broadway.

According to an Iowa City police complaint, Martarius Junious, 21, was approached by officers in an unmarked car as he was walking away from the alleged transaction. The complaint said Junious looked at the vehicle and dropped a bag consistent with drug packaging out of his pocket.

The officers yelled, “Police, stop” several times, the complaint said, and Junious allegedly looked directly at an officer displaying his badge, then began running away. The complaint said one officer picked up the discarded bag and others pursued Junious and advised him to stop running.

Officers apprehended Junious after a short foot pursuit with no further incident, the complaint said. He allegedly had marijuana in his pocket and approximately $500 cash. The complaint said there was also marijuana residue in the bag.

Junious refused to provide police with his address.

Junious has two previous convictions for possession of a controlled substance. He is charged with third-and-subsequent possession of a controlled substance, an aggravated misdemeanor.
