Iowa City City Council votes to end Youth Advisory Commission

The Iowa City City Council approved a resolution Tuesday to abolish the city’s Youth Advisory Commission.

The resolution was passed with approval of the City Council’s consent calendar.

The commission has been around since 1996 and currently has five members.

“The City Council values the engagement of young people and is not in any way, shape, or form trying to squelch the voice of high-school youth,” Mayor Matt Hayek said on Monday. “It’s great to have their perspectives when voting on issues in the community.”

The city will now focus on creating ad-hoc committees to work on specific projects throughout the city.

The Youth Advisory Commission is the first to be abolished by the City Council; more boards and commissions will be axed after they are evaluated.
