Local man charged with allegedly hitting woman in the jaw

An Iowa City man has been arrested for allegedly hitting a woman in the jaw.

Derek Stoneking, 27, 10 Regal Lane, was charged June 2 with causing willful bodily injury.

According to a University of Iowa police complaint, law-enforcement officials were called to Gibson Square Park after receiving reports of a female on the ground crying and a male kneeling beside her.

The woman told police the man had punched her on the left side of her jaw.

Stoneking told police officials he "hit her," according to the complaint. The woman experienced swelling and redness, and an X-ray showed she had a broken jaw.

Willful injury causing bodily injury is a Class-D felony punishable by up to five years in prison and a maximum $7,500 fine.
