Local man charged with allegedly assaulting an officer

A local man was charged with allegedly assaulting an officer while being intoxicated.

Leon Shivers, 41, 60 Regal Lane, was charged with assault on peace officers and others, third offense OWI, and driving while license denied or revoked.

According to an Iowa City police complaint, on Thursday, police observed Shivers driving westbound on Lakeside with a brake light that was not operating. Police officials pulled behind Shivers and he allegedly got out of his car, was ordered back into the vehicle, and attempted to get into a residence.

Shivers refused police official orders and began fighting with officers, the complaint said. Following the altercation, Shivers was Tasered and arrested.

Assault on peace officers and others is a serious misdemeanor.

Third-offense OWI is a Class-D felony.

Driving while license suspended or revoked is a serious misdemeanor.
