Iowa city man charged with failing to register as sex offender

According to an Iowa City police report, Michael Howard, 57, address unknown, was arrested March 23 and charged with third-degree burglary and failing to register at the Sex Offender Registry on March 22.

Iowa City police responded to a call about an unknown man a woman reported seeing coming out of her residence with some of her belongings, the police report said.

At approximately 12:30 a.m. a man who fit the description was found.

Howard was also charged with failing to register as a sex offender.

A male reported Howard began living with him at the end of January, and the two lived together from the end of January until a reported assault on Feb. 28.

Howard has been on the sexual-abuse registry since 1996, according to the report.

Third-degree burglary is a Class-D felony punishable by up to five years in jail and a maximum fine of $7,500.

Failure to register as a sex offender is also a Class-D felony.
