Cedar Rapids woman allegedly wrote false checks

A Cedar Rapids woman was charged with falsifying checks to herself from her place of work.

According to an Iowa City police report, Marlys Brooks, 54, Cedar Rapids, was charged on Jan. 23 with first-degree theft. Brooks allegedly had access to the checkbook for her place of employment. Brooks allegedly wrote out approximately 41 checks from the business to herself between June and December 2011.

The alleged checks were written without authorization from the owner and were for her own personal gain, the report said. The checks allegedly totaled $18,920.78.

First-degree theft is a Class C felony, punishable by up to 10 years in jail and a maximum fine of $10,000.
