Bruegger’s may reopen after fire investigation

Bruegger’s Bagel Bakery may once again serve bagels on Iowa Avenue, but not before the investigation into the cause of the fire is complete, an official of the corporate office said on Monday.

"They don’t have a firm date," said Tracy Aiello. "They’re waiting on the conclusion of the investigation."

The cause of the Sept. 24 fire remains under investigation, said Iowa City Fire Marshal John Grier. He said 56 articles from the fire — including the oven — have been sent to Anderson Engineering Co. of Streamwood, Ill., to determine the cause of the fire.

"I spent two days in the Chicagoland area," Grier said. "We got through about half of the artifacts."

Grier said investigators are still determining a date at which to examine the remaining items.

"The cause still remains undetermined," he said. "The investigation remains underway at this time."
