UI emeritus Professor Himie Voxman dies at 99

World-renowned University of Iowa Professor Emeritus Himie Voxman died at the age of 99 on Nov. 21.

A well-known and respected music educator in the nation, Voxman was the UI School of Music director from 1954 to 1980.

Peter Alexander, a retired UI Arts Center Relations director, said Voxman’s death was a great loss to all.

"He was just such a delightful and cheerful person, and that was part of his great success as a person," said Alexander, also an adjunct assistant professor emeritus in the UI School of Music. "He spent his life doing what he wanted to do, and he was able to share it with others."

The UI named the Voxman Music Building, which was destroyed in the 2008 flood, in Voxman’s honor in 1995. The university also made Voxman an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters in 2008.

"Himie Voxman was an outstanding faculty member who served the university extremely well for an extended period of time," said UI spokesman Tom Moore. "[He] established a legacy at the university that will never be forgotten."
