IC man charged with selling stolen bike on Craigslist

An Iowa City man was charged with third-degree theft Oct. 28 after he allegedly tried to sell a stolen bike on Craigslist.

According to a complaint by UI police, Ryan Larson, 18, allegedly stole a Trek 2.3 bicycle — valued at $720 — from the north bike racks of the Main Library between Oct. 11 and 12. The owner of the bicycle reported it stolen to UI police and later saw it for sale on Craigslist.

The complaint said officers contacted the seller and set up a time to meet at Burge to look at the bike. Larson allegedly said during the meeting that he had purchased the bike from a friend last summer and had ridden it around 500 miles. Larson also allegedly used the alias Ryan Smith on his email while communicating with officers.

Larson allegedly refused to answer questions post-Miranda.

Third-degree theft is an aggravated misdemeanor.
