Hunninghake surrenders Iowa medical license

University of Iowa spokesman Tom Moore says the UI fully cooperated with the Iowa Board of Medicine’s investigation of former UI medical Professor Gary Hunninghake prior to his settlement.

The release said the board charged Hunninghake with viewing pictures of nude children and other inappropriate sexual material on the Internet while in the workplace, having a sexual relationship with a subordinate female staff member, and accessing her medical records without an appropriate medical purpose, violating appropriate professional boundaries with another subordinate female staff member, inappropriately prescribing medications to himself, and filing a false police report in Chicago.

Hunninghake was placed on paid leave from the UI in April 2010 with a annual salary of $360,000 while UI police investigated him for child pornography. Days after Hunninghake was placed on paid leave, he was charged with filing a false police report in Chicago after staging his own stabbing.

The UI police closed their child-pornography investigation without filing any charges, and Hunninghake stepped down from his position March 31. His resignation was effective in May.
