Human rights commission requests early IC council vote

The Iowa City Human Rights Commission wants the Iowa City City Council to weigh in more quickly on a slew of ordinances that would give more rights to illegal immigrants.

In a letter to the city, the commission requested that councilors each weigh in on whether they support the proposed measures and provide explanations for their positions. The commission members say this will give them the necessary information to make the Nov. 22 work session more efficient.

The Human Rights Commission sent nine proposed ordinances that would give illegal immigrants in Iowa City more access to city services. The commission hopes to do this by educating the public and increasing communication between immigrant communities andthe city government.
