Hawkeye field hockey drops second straight

No. 12 Iowa fell to No. 14 Michigan, 2-0, on Oct. 1 at Ocker Field in Ann Arbor, Mich.

The Hawkeyes’ second-straight loss drops their record to 8-3 (1-2 Big Ten). Iowa lost to Penn State, 3-0, in Iowa City on Sept. 25.

"We did not step up to the challenge today," head coach Tracey Griesbaum said in a release. "Our level of focus, teamwork, and execution were lacking."

Iowa came out of the gates well, recording three shots and two penalty corners in the first six minutes of the first half, but the Hawkeyes stalled after that point. They added just two more shots and one penalty corner to their total over the next 64 minutes.

Michigan (8-3, 1-1) first scored in the 13th minute with a goal from freshman Aline Fobe. Sophomore Rachael Mack added the Wolverines’ second goal at the 60-minute mark.

Junior goalkeeper Kathleen McGraw was a rare bright spot for Iowa, snagging six saves.

The next test for the Hawkeyes will come on Saturday, when they face Ohio State in Columbus at noon. Iowa then will travel to play Ohio in Athens, Ohio, a nonconference matchup on Oct. 9.
