UI student missing after fall in India

A University of Iowa student is presumed dead after falling 100 yards while hiking above the Ganges River near Munsiyari, India, Sept. 24, according to the Star-Tribune.

Search teams are continuing to look for 20-year-old Tom Plotkin.

Plotkin, a junior international business major from Minnetonka, Minn. was taking part in a semester-abroad outdoors-adventure trip in India. While hiking on a cobblestone trail with five other students, Plotkin twisted his ankle and fell down a steep drop to a boulder-strewn ledge, family friend Phil Forve, told the Star-Tribune.

Elizabeth Brenner, Plotkin’s mother, told the Tribune her son left for India in August and enrolled for a semester in the National Outdoor Leadership School of Lander, Wy.

According to the Tribune, roughly 600 Indians, including police officers, volunteers, and military personnel have been looking for Plotkin since; the search was still underway as of Sunday.
