Local man faces abuse charges

Iowa City police arrested a man who allegedly strangled his former girlfriend in her apartment, causing her to pass out.

Police said 39-year-old Jonathan Krueger entered his ex-girlfriend’s apartment on Lakeside Drive at 2 p.m. July 23. According to reports, after she told him to leave, Krueger allegedly grabbed her by the throat, forced her to the bed, and said, "If I can’t have you, nobody can … you are going to die now, bitch."

Reports said Krueger stopped squeezing, allowing his ex to ask why he was trying to kill her. He allegedly told her to quit yelling and grabbed her throat with two hands, squeezing until she passed out.

Police said Krueger straddled her abdomen, and she tried to pull his fingers away from her throat.

The defendant and the woman split up five months ago after a nine-year relationship. Krueger has an arrest in May for domestic assault.
