The Johnson County Board of Supervisors reviewed a policy regarding social media during a work session Wednesday.

A subcommittee of various county officials have been drafting a social-media policy since May 2010.

The policy aims to set out guidelines for county employees who use social media, and, once approved, will be included in the employee handbook. Officials said the guidelines will give employees a “fair warning” about the potential consequences of misusing or abusing social media.

Some county officials would like to use social media for their departments, and the policy addresses some formatting issues for consistency.

Supervisor Janelle Rettig said she is excited for the policy to be adopted in the near future so Johnson County can catch up with some counties that use social media, including Polk, Story, and Linn.

“We were hesitant to get going without a policy,” Rettig said.
