North Liberty to vote on gun ban

North Liberty City councilors will vote today on a resolution to ban firearms on city property.

The list of prohibited weapons includes pellet, BB, and dart guns in addition to standard firearms and weapons, and the measure would outlaw possession on any land owned, leased, or occupied by the city of North Liberty.

The resolution makes exceptions for certain peace officers, members of the military, and correctional officers, among others. Violators would be subject to arrest and punishment under state law.

The Iowa City City Council and the Johnson County Board of Supervisors passed similar resolutions in the past week.
