NCAA won’t penalize Hawkeye basketball

The Iowa men’s basketball team will not face any penalties because of recent violations in which recruits met movie stars Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore.

The violations happened on Sept. 11 during the Iowa-Iowa State football game when two prospective recruits — rumored to be Marcus Paige and Josh Oglesby — met the famed couple at halftime. The two also met former Iowa basketball players Dean Oliver and Reggie Evans.

The NCAA accepted the university’s response to the meetings and deemed the actions to be “secondary” violations — which the NCAA defines as providing only a minimal recruiting advantage.

Although all of this happened before new head coach Fran McCaffery’s first game as a Hawkeye, Athletics Director Gary Barta released a statement saying he was satisfied with the ruling and that the violations were unintentional.

“We have a culture of full compliance,” he said. “The commitment to doing things the right way is one of the many reasons why we hired Fran McCaffery.”
