Man charged with 2nd OWI after allegedly hitting cyclists

Iowa City police have alleged that a local man hit and injured two bicyclists with his car when he was drunk.

Colton McMaster, 22, was charged April 9 with second-offense OWI.

According to police reports, McMaster was stopped on Bowery Street at a red light, waiting to turn onto Gilbert Street. Two cyclists were stopped on the sidewalk on Bowery Street waiting to cross Gilbert Street, officers said.

When the light changed, the two proceeded across the intersection. But McMaster turned and hit the cyclists, according to the reports.

Both were taken to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics for non-life-threatening injuries.

Second-offense OWI is an aggravated misdemeanor, punishable by up to two years in prison and a maximum fine of $6,250.
