2 UI students win Hearst Awards

Two University of Iowa students, and Daily Iowan employees, have been honored with college’s most prestige award in journalism. The Hearst Journalism Awards Program awarded Scott Miller second place in the sports-writing category and Jillian Petrus fourth place for television broadcast.

Miller will receive a $1,500 scholarship, and Petrus will receive $750.

Founded in 1960, the Hearst Program was created to encourage and support journalism education at the college level. The 50th-annual program offered more than $550,000 in awards this year.

Miller, a junior majoring in journalism and sports studies, said he was surprised to learn he had finshed second.

“It was a last-minute submission and to even be recognized would have been surprising, but being honored with second place was a complete surprise,” he said.

Petrus, a senior studying journalism and political science, said the news of her fourth-place finish brought tears to her eyes. She described winning her award as extremely exciting and such an honor.

“It’s great to be apart of this and it’s really exciting for The Daily Iowan and Daily Iowan TV, which goes under-appreciated,” she said. “I can’t wait to represent for them in California.”
