Fire reported

Iowa City firefighters responded to a structure fire early Tuesday morning.

According to reports, the Fire Department was called to a possible fire around 2 a.m. at 220 Lafayette St. Two fire engines and one truck were dispatched to the scene, where roughly 25 people were evacuating. One of the engine crews reported a fire on the second floor of the two-story building and advanced a hose line into the building.

The fire was quickly brought under control and was extinguished shortly thereafter, according to reports. Fire crews were on the scene for two hours.

Reports said the fire originated in a utility closet in a second-floor hallway, but the cause remains under investigation.

None of the residents or firefighters were injured, and residents were allowed to return to their apartments after the fire was extinguished. The cost of damage to the building was not available Tuesday night.
