Weinberg gives up psychology license

A former Iowa City psychologist currently in prison on charges of possession of child pornography voluntarily surrendered his license to practice psychology.

Howard Weinberg, 61, waived his right to a hearing before the Iowa Board of Psychology in November.

He was sentenced to the maximum sentence of 10 years in prison on Sept. 18. He had pleaded guilty to federal charges of possession of child pornography on March 31.

Weinberg was charged in April 2008 after his wife took his computer to a store to be repaired. A tip from store employees led investigators to at least 600 pictures and dozens of videos showing children engaging in sex acts.

If Weinberg were to seek reinstatement of his license, he would have to show the basis for his license surrender no longer exists and that it would be in the public’s interest for the license to be reinstated.
