Food Bank breaks record

The Iowa City Crisis Center Food Bank served a record number of families last month. On average, 959 families used the service per week in November.

Program director Sarah Benson-Witry said November is typically a high-demand month, partly because of the reduction of outdoor labor employment as winter approaches.

But this November was even higher than last year, something, she said, that was concerning because last November was also record-breaking largely due to the flood.

Benson-Witry is unsure of whether the increased amount of grocery bags given out this month will have an effect on the Food Bank’s supply for December. The community is particularly generous around the holiday season, she said.
