Woman charged with assault on officer

Police charged an Iowa City woman on Monday after she allegedly assaulted a police officer.

Ayla Marshek, 21, of 1123 Town Court Apt. B, was charged with assault on a peace officer and second-offense public intoxication.

According to police reports, a police officer responded to the intersection of Oakcrest Street and Woodside Drive because of reports of a woman lying in the middle of the street.

Police said Marshek refused medical treatment and became verbally abusive. Marshek then allegedly hit the officer in the face with her fist.

Marshek had a blood-alcohol content of .282, bloodshot eyes, slurred speech, and poor balance, according to police.

Assault on a peace officer and public intoxication are both serious misdemeanors, generally punishable by up to a year in jail and a fine of $1,500.
