New trial granted in infant-shaking case

The Iowa Supreme Court granted a new trial to a Coralville man convicted of shaking his infant child and causing shaken-baby syndrome.

Edwin Paredes was convicted in 2006 of child endangerment resulting in serious injury, and his conviction was upheld by an appeals court.

The Supreme Court ruled on Sept. 18 that the district court was incorrect in excluding hearsay statements that may have implicated the child’s mother, Cassidy Millard.

His conviction was thrown out, and the case returned to district court for a new trial.
