Man accused in shooting pleads not guilty

A man accused of shooting another person in a bar parking lot pled not guilty to charges of attempted murder on Sept. 11.

Bernard Butler, 18, of Cedar Rapids is also charged with public intoxication.

According to Iowa City police, Butler had been involved in a fight with Cortez Parker of Milwaukee in the parking lot of Los Cocos, 1921 Keokuk St.

Butler allegedly shot Parker in the abdomen, and Parker was taken to the UI Hospitals and Clinics, where he underwent surgery for non-life-threatening injuries, according to police reports.

Officers arrested Butler south of the business, police said.

Heather German, the former owner of Los Cocos, shut the bar down after the shooting and later sold the business.

Attempted murder is a Class B felony, punishable by up to 25 years in prison.

Butler’s trial is set for Nov. 2.
