Sex offender charged with failing to register

A convicted sex offender was recently arrested for allegedly failing to register after moving to Iowa City, according to the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office.

Michael Roe, Jr., 28, 411 S. Lucas St. Apt. 2, was charged for violating the Iowa Sex Offender Registry.

He was being held Wednesday afternoon on $10,000 cash-only bond in the Johnson County Jail for the violation in addition to a 2003 warrant for the same offense.

Roe has been on the registry since a 1998 conviction, and he signed a form in 2002 requiring him to register with the sheriff in the county where he resides within five days of moving.

He did not report to the Sheriff’s Office until Sept. 4, although he renewed his driver’s license on Aug. 14.

Roe was released from a Florida prison on July 20 and informed the Florida Sex Offender Registry that he would move to Iowa City.

Roe was convicted in 1998 with assault with intent to commit sexual abuse. In 2000, he was convicted of two counts of lascivious acts with a child. All three cases were in Johnson County and involved girls under the age of 13.
