A University of Iowa student who was the subject of a viral tweet earlier this week was previously reported to the UI police for harassment and stalking dating to December 2017, according to documents obtained by The Daily Iowan.

On June 12, in response to a request from the DI, the UI produced two police reports previously filed against current UI student Nicholas Caracci.

In an email to the DI, the UI stated that the two reports had been filed by “a single reporting party.” In the reports, the name of the reporting party was redacted.

In a police report filed on Dec. 5, 2017, Caracci was accused of stalking an individual beginning in March 2017.

According to the report, Caracci was issued a formal letter from the Dean of Students Office barring him from contacting the person.

In the second report filed on April 27, 2018, Caracci was accused of third-degree harassment, and the report noted he was using computer equipment.

The UI’s investigation started after a tweet was posted June 11 from another UI student showing private messages that Caracci had sent her. The tweet received more than 1,000 retweets and hundreds of responses from other women, saying they had received similar messages from Caracci.

Since the tweet went viral, Caracci’s social media and blog have been taken down. The DI attempted to contact Caracci for comment but did not receive a response by the time of publishing.

In an email to the DI, UI officials said they encourage people who have received harassing messages or unwanted contact to report it to university officials and law enforcement.
