In Big Ten play, Iowa field hockey struggled through another tough, and ultimately disappointing, weekend in the East.

After a 1-0 loss to No. 23 Rutgers on Sunday and a 2-0 loss to No. 10 Maryland on Sept. 22, the quest for the Hawkeyes’ first conference win of the season continues.

The Hawkeyes took the field in Piscataway, New Jersey, to face the Scarlet Knights and the 87-degree heat; the game featured strong goaltending on both sides.

Senior goalkeeper Katie Jones made 5 saves during the match, but of the 5 penalty corners she faced, the Scarlet Knights capitalized on 1, scoring the only goal of the game.

The Hawkeyes had 7 penalty-corner chances but came up empty.

Before the loss to the Scarlet Knights, the Hawkeyes wound up on the wrong end of the score in their second conference contest of the season. Iowa at least made it on the board against Maryland but was unable to score late.

For the first half and much of the second, the score remained at because ofexceptional defense and goalkeeping on both sides. Iowa turned away 6 Maryland shots and 2 penalty corners in the first half, and the Terrapins rejected the Hawkeyes’ 7 first-half shots.

It wasn’t until the 60th minute that either team broke through; Maryland’s Madison Maguire hit a hard shot just inside the circle for her first goal of the season. Maryland followed with another goal on a penalty corner two minutes later for a 2-goal lead.

Iowa made a great attempt to come back.

Freshman Maddy Murphy scored in the 68th minute, her 7th goal of the season, but it wasn’t enough to bring the Hawkeyes back. For the final two minutes, they were unable to match the Terrapins’ score.
