Epilepsy awareness

Epilepsy+awareness

Following an interest of epilepsy in the news lately, Daily Iowan TV’s Katie Sextro takes a look at what it’s like to live with the condition.

Epilepsy is a brain condition that causes a person to have seizures. But Clinical Professor of Neurology Mark Granner said it can be diagnosed and treated.

“We really focus on quality of life so that people can get back to driving as soon as legally possible, get back to full activities, complete their education,” he said.

About 1 percent of Iowa’s population is diagnosed with epilepsy — including University of Iowa junior Brandon Furuta.

A few summers ago, Furuta had a seizure that caused a brain injury and short term memory loss.

“Because of the short term memory loss, sometimes I feel like a lot of the information I’m learning doesn’t always get through,” Furuta said.
